X Y Zine Closing Party
Writers, artists, and their friends are invited to celebrate to close of X Y Zine!
4pm – 7pm October 1st
Gallery Installation
Step into the brilliant minds of Carey Atchison, Dax Norman, and John David David Brown. We’re covering our walls with xeroxed pages from their sketchbooks. X Y Zine plays with the 90s aesthetic with authentic works from and inspired by that time period.
Carey Atchison
Carey Atchison is a prolific artist and long-time Austin resident. You’ll often find him drawing at coffee shops with friends, discussing music and comic book trivia. His distinctive style is marked by soft pencils and repeating textures, reminiscent of pattern fills used in early comics. You won’t find Carey’s work on a personal website; the Gen Xerox installation is a rare opportunity to see Atchison’s work in a public setting.
Dax Norman
Dax Norman has been making art and music since 2002. He has animated two feature films, Leptune (2015) and Symphony in Sweeatch (2020), and now he’s exploring the world of NFTs. Norman’s music is electronic experimental soundtracks. You can find his work on Etsy and daxnormal.com
John David Brown
Also called “Crazy John,” Brown is an extremely prolific artist. His home contains boxes and boxes of sketches and comic book pages he has illustrated throughout the years, dating back to the 80s and 90s. John’s work is not easily accessed; Gen Xerox is a rare opportunity to see his work.
Short Story Contest
Cash prizes, free to enter! The prompt is Four Queens. Writers are invited to submit their short stories through May 13th. Winners will be announced May 16th. Participants could have their short stories read on the Dear Diary Coffee podcast, even if they don’t win. They may also be invited to read their stories at two events: the X Y Zine Reading Party May 21st and Story Time Campers September 9th.
Artist Meetups
Do you like to draw at coffee shops? Come to one of our monthly artist meetups! They are from 4pm – 7pm every third Saturday of the month, and attract both professionals and novices. Kids are welcome too.
Zine Market
Open call
Dear Diary is filling its consignment shelves with indie zines.
May 13th is the deadline for artists and writers to apply for X Y Zine. Zines, comics, and books will be considered.
Participating artists will be invited to set up a booth to sell their print media directly to customers 2pm – 7pm July 2nd.
Story Time Campers
Join us at McKinney Falls State Park for short story readings around a campfire! We’ll be at camp sites #30 and #32 Friday, September 9th. Story time begins at 8:00pm. Be sure to bring bug spray and a flashlight. Also, be prepared to pay a small park entry fee (I think it’s $6.00)
Optional
Bike campers are leaving from Dear Diary at 5:30pm to ride to McKinney Falls.
If you’d like to pitch a tent (bike or not), you can! Please RSVP if that’s what you want to do, and help chip in for the camping fee.
24 Hour Comics Day
Cartoonist Scott McCloud came up with the 24 hour comic idea in 1990. Since then, it’s grown into a global challenge that takes place every year!
Dear Diary Coffee is hosting this event in Austin, starting at 8am October 1st, and ending 24 hours later.
Artists are invited to work at the shop overnight. Participants can take advantage of bottomless drip coffee to stay awake! Plus, we’re ordering vegan pizza. Please RSVP since space (and pizza) are limited.
X Y Zine Closing Party
Saturday, October 1st
Everyone who participated in X Y Zine, plus friends, are invited to celebrate almost 5 months of illustrated storytelling!
The party, which is scheduled for 4pm – 7pm, will double as a snack break for everyone busy working on their 24 hour comics challenge.
